EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

Apropos of nothing or everything, the Easy Listening Sunday segment is back from its unexplained hiatus this week. For such a seemingly innocuous singer, people have a really divisive reaction towards him.  I'm a fan personally.  I used to rally on the other side of the fence, but due to the influence and persuasion of my roommate Chris, who listens to John Mayer a lot in his room, I would most likely, possibly would in fact go see John Mayer in concert, especially if he performs his song "Gravity."

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

It's the first snow day here in New York on the first December Sunday of this winter.  I awoke and looked out my window to discover a white layer over the rooftops, branches, and parked cars.  And as I write this, flakes have begun falling again. All this can only mean one thing and that is chestnuts (not deez nuts) roasting over an open fire.  Well, if you want to be technical about it, I'd have to do it over my gas stove in my Brooklyn apartment, which isn't really an "open fire," and also my roommates would probably look at me funny while I was doing that.  Actually, as possibly one of the most incompetent cooks out there, I ask, "How on earth does one actually roast chestnuts, and does it taste any good?"  What does taste good is the first snowflake of the winter falling on my tongue.  Mmm, global warming never tasted so refreshing!

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

Is it too soon to play this particular song below for this week's Easy Listening Sunday installment? Thanksgiving is a fantastic holiday, but it wouldn't be the same holiday if it occurred in any other month, because part of the appeal of Thanksgiving is its status as the opening act for the main show, Christmas.  I personally am such a sucker for the December holiday season.  Call it marketing gullibility or whatnot, but I really do feel all warm, cozy, and festive at seeing the red Starbucks holiday cups, the lights hanging from trees, and hearing this easy listening holiday song featuring Ray Charles and Betty Carter: [youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=G5Rbkcxiibw]

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

I recently discovered that I have 31,000 mileage points that are still eligible for use.  I may use it to buy a one-way ticket to Lonesome Town. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVvIfoNBY3w]

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

I may be grouchy at times and unable to interpret your signs, but as Billy Joel once said you took the good times, you took the bad times, and you took me just the way I am. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YekA5eswvLw]

And here's a cover by Diana Krall that is just way too sincere:

Have a good Easy Listening Sunday, boys and girls.

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY (HOLIDAY EDITION)

I asked for and received an extension on my weekly Easy Listening Sunday segment this Labor Day weekend, which explains its absence yesterday.  I apologize to the three readers out there, somewhere, who sat for naught on emotional pins and needles awaiting their weekly Sunday tune. I have a deep confession: I don't really like the Beatles.  I know, blasphemy!  Will someone out there just give me a holler or at least an 'amen' to let me know that I'm not the only one that feels this way about this British boy band from the days of yore?  I do however like women, but I'm more of a one-woman sort of a guy, so to be accurate (tho' not necessarily grammatical) 'I like woman.'

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaLfDnShEn0]

I may not like the Beatles, but I can recognize the genius of John Lennon.  His song writing abilities from what I can discern with my amateur bag of musical knowledge is awesome.  If given an assignment to compose a love song or poem (1), the general result would be a comedy of cliched and corny rhymes, and trite metaphors.  Yes, this is a 'pop' song, one that could epitomize the easy listening genre, and consequently easy to dismiss, yet I challenge anyone to write something comparable.

1. Genres that are two sides of the same coin?  Discuss.

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

I think a central ingredient of our humanity--that inimitable quality which says we are not mere animals, but unique in some way--is the very complex and often conflicting desires and emotions that govern our lives day in and day out. Human individuals are constantly in a dialectical relationship with themselves, whereby two opposing actions or forces occupy the same space that can sometimes create an emotive singularity.

For example, when animals are hungry, they will search, some hunt, and consume the end product. This process for animals is yes, an evolving one depending on their changing habitats and surroundings, but for the most part, the menu if you will, was worked out eons ago. The only thing the animal is concerned with is which item on that menu is most immediately available.

I on the other hand, when feeling the sensation of hunger earlier this evening weighed the following thoughts: I had a rare craving for some McDonalds, but such a meal would not compliment my recent, and generally successful attempts to eat healthy. Moreover I wanted to go to the gym before dinner and desired a filling yet quick snack that would also enable me a quick burst of energy. All these factors occupy a singular place in my mind. If you consider that this thought process was applied to something so primitive and necessary, then just imagine what is occurring when you're pondering more abstract matters, say those that govern feelings arising from our interactions with others that can result in feelings of "love" on one end, and "hate" on the other. However at times, both diametric emotions can find themselves joined at the hip in an emotional singularity.

It is our ability to both love and hate one person, or to wish someone's departure and simultaneously wish for them to stay, or to desire to be both with or without you that is ultimately our distinguishing characteristic.

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

The story behind this song is pretty poignant and sad.  I'll leave it up to you on this easy listening Sunday to Google it. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ae2uidckqE]

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

Summer is almost over, but the weekly Easy Listening Sundays aren't.  This week's segment is a mellow one from circa 1995 courtesy of Tony Rich Project.  The lyrics pretty much speak for themselves. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CA2Pi4gYxQ]

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

Another week down--Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and...Sunday. Your weekend may or may not have ended the way you were hoping it would when you got off work or class on Friday, but regardless it did come to an end. There are only two other constants to life other than the inevitability of the forward progress of time: your weekly Sunday dose of easy listening music and unrequited love. EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

Once I was in love with a woman and couldn't keep my mind on nothing else (except during lunch when deciding between the Italian BMT--with everything minus onions--at Subway or the magically delicious Taste of Heaven--turkey burger with honey mustard--at D&D deli on Lafayette and Spring). I'd trade the world for this good thing I found (well...anything but my 1989 Upper Deck mint condition complete set which includes Ken Griffey Jr's rookie card).

If she was bad, I couldn't see it (My optometrist did say that in a few years I should be able to get laser eye surgery).

She could do no wrong and I turned my back on my best friend after he put her down.  I don't care what Percy Sledge says about when a man loves a woman.  Fellas, don't make this same mistake that I made: Remember, bro's before ho's.

EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

When you go back to work or class on Monday coworkers and classmates inevitably ask "How was your weekend?" You smile. "It was nice, relaxing, and I went to a couple parties" you say. They nod familiarly and respond with the stock reply about how the weekends are always too short. Meanwhile behind your friendly visage, melancholy brews: You find yourself going out, and enjoying the laughter and company of old familiar friends and new ones, nonetheless a lacuna grows as none of them compares to...you, or rather nothing compares 2 u. EASY LISTENING SUNDAY

Yet another Sunday which means another installment of your favorite weekly soft music jam for your hang over or broken heart...or both. If hung over I recommend an extremely chilled Coke AND Gatorade and anything from the McDonalds breakfast menu, then finish this off with a cup of coffee. If heart broken, then I don't know what to tell ya'. Whatever it is that you do to mend it just don't come off like Sting who basically sounds like a stalker.

Every breath you take

Every move you make

Every bond you break

Every step you take

I'll be watching you...

Stalker! Good song though.
