The Adventures of Burn-E

Pixar revisits Wall-E and treats us to a hilarious short film that shows us what happened to one of the utility robots during Wall-E and Eve's adventure. Watch the tale of Burn-E (There's a final scene right after the credits as well)!

Batman vs Joker vs Alien vs Predator vs More Predators

Created by aspiring director Sandy Collora, a concept designer in Hollywood, on a budget $30,000 this Batman short was shown at the 2003 Comic-Con to much excitement. What followed afterwards was yet another cautionary tale of Hollywood and the lawyers stomping on and crushing someone's nuts. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hjp0I_okX0w]

This person's comment about Collora's film made me laugh.

I always thought the only good thing about Dead End was that it showed that Batman could appear onscreen in an outfit that looked a lot like what he wears in the comics. That's why I get so mad that Nolan insists on dressing Batman up like the Gimp in Pulp Fiction.

Documentary Trailer: Courting Condi (Rice)

The American mythos that you can get whatever you want if you try hard enough is put to the test in this "musical docu-tragi-comedy" about one man's journey to win the heart and vajayjay of our secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice. From the trailer, which features some awesome cameos, Courting Condi looks hysterical.

Here's another funny ass clip:

Will there be a sequel, maybe titled Pining for Palin?

Actor Screen Tests

The New York Times Lynn Hirschberg interviews actors in this series called Screen Test. The interviews are a bit self-indulgent to say the least, but I really love the lighting of the interviews and most of the interviews have one or two gem response by the actor.

First Date with a Porn Star (Semi-NSFW)

Fear Factor host and comic Joe Rogan recounts on his blog witnessing a guy's first date with a girl who unbeknown to the guy was an actress performer in the porn industry. And he took photos of the happy couple.

The kid’s eyes are locked on the screen. He’s got this look in his eyes is like he really believes that his brain must be malfunctioning. Like he just can’t comprehend what he’s watching. Like as if he didn’t even know she was a porn star. His jaw drops.

After about 30 seconds of this kid standing in front of the screen, frozen in the hypnotic spell of ass, mouth, ass, mouth, ass, mouth… he turns to her asks her a question, and I hear her say, “I was gonna tell you.”

I never thought I would ever say this but God Bless Joe Rogan.

Show Writing Credits Explained

Do you ever wonder what all those different credits on a TV show or whatnot mean? I do. Now I know. Most of that is all bullshit, as Ken Levine explains:

Only producers were entitled to Emmys if their show won Best Comedy. And along with the prestige (chicks dig dem producers), the titles helped establish pay grades.

So everyone wanted in on that action. (And by everyone I mean ME.)

The show runners were promoted to the made-up title of Executive Producer and Story Editors became Producers.

Then writing staffs grew. More bogus titles were needed. That led to Co-Executive Producer, Supervising Producer, Co-Producer, Executive Story Editor, Executive Script Consultant.

And then there were the punch-up guys, writers who helped out once or twice a week, usually on re-write nights. The spiffy title of Creative Consultant was dreamed up for them. But even they started getting into the act. There are now Consulting Producers. Soon there will be Consulting Executive Producers, Consulting Supervising Producers, Consulting Co-Supervising Co-Executive Story Producers.

But fluffers never get proper credit. It's a goddamn travesty I tell you.

Kung Fu Panda Breaks Through Bus Stop Glass

I'm not sure whether this was intended or merely a case of "creative vandalism," but it's a cool effect nonetheless!

The message I'm learning is: Pandas. Not cute. Nor cuddly. Will kick your face through the glass. Avoid eye contact with all pandas.

Coming Soon: Ghostbusters 3?

Variety is reporting that Columbia studio has hired two producers from the US The Office to write the script for what would be Ghostbusters 3!

Progress had been slow because of the likely wage demands of the original cast, Variety reported.

But the recruitment of Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, nominated for Emmy awards for their work on The Office, to write the script is being seen as a sign that the film will finally be made.

I don't know how well it'll translate today, but I'm excited about this development.

Inside Job: Saks Finance Manager + 1 Arrested for Stealing Thousands

A Saks finance manager, 51-year-old Ava John and her 32-year-old niece were "arrested and charged with stealing at least $680,000 from the company in a false invoicing scheme." The best part about these stories is typically what the thieves blew their money on. Anyway, this reminds me of a recent New Yorker article by John Colapinto that looks at the history and current high-tech strategies (Target has an actual crime laboratory inside their office headquarters) of retail loss prevention or the prevention of "shrink," that is "the erosion of profits--some forty billion dollars in 2006...resulting from shoplifting, employee theft, and organized retail crime (professional thieves who steal goods in large volume for resale)." Interestingly Colapinto states that "the biggest theft problem faced by retailers is internal."

Shoplifting accounts for almost thirty-two percent of shrink; employee, or internal, theft accounts for almost forty-seven per cent.

And these two movies below are my two all time fave con movies, and they are classier than a tuxedo t-shirt, too. If you're gonna steal, do it with class and style:

Interview with Genius Japanese Animator Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki--creator of Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle which are two of my favorite animated films--in a recent interview about his new hit Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea explains why he favors the traditional pencil over computers:

I think animation is something that needs the pencil, needs man's drawing hand, and that is why I decided to do this work in this way. Currently computer graphics are of course used a great deal and, as I've said before, this use can at times be excessive. I will continue to use my pencil as long as I can.

Not to argue with a master, but Pixar has demonstrably proven that animation doesn't need the pencil, but Miyazaki's drawings are unquestionably infused with something magical that no computer could produce on its own. Tools aside, Pixar and Miyazaki share a commonality in that what makes their films so successful is ultimately great and compelling stories for all ages.
