Last Night's Party

Few weekends ago I attended an engagement party followed by karaoke. Some of these photos were taken by Pooja and Munira, hat tip to both! Kaizar and Pooja!

Me, Kaizar, and man of the hour Bob!

Me and Pooja!

Brought to you by Amstel Light.

Kaizar, Munira, Bob and Lauren, Pooja and me!

Kaizar and I afterwards, outside of the restaurant trying to figure out a jump photo.

Wasting some time at Mun's apartment before heading out for karaoke later that night. Pooja OMG IS TWITTERING.

I decided to spice up someone's drink by adding edamame to it.

The growing BYOB situation at karaoke.

Threesome duet situation.

Namik!

Striking a pose to the beat of Total Eclipse of the Heart (probably).

Pamela!

And then I destroyed a plate of Korean food afterwards.

The End.

Last Night's Party

Couple weekends ago I went to my friend Ian's apartment to celebrate his birthday! Pooja and I decided to bring the most random six pack of beer we could find in the grocery store (I forgot which we picked out, but wow, it was pretty terrible beer). While in line at the register, I turned to Pooja and said, "You should bring something totally random to the party. Random like," I looked around, "...cantaloupe." I thought it was even more hysterical when she declined a bag from the checkout clerk. FYI: Bringing random fruit that is difficult to eat to parties will be the latest thing to do this summer.

Ian is an actor and with many of his buddies at the party being actors as well, we eventually got into a discussion about acting. I told Cyrus and Pooja here to express "pity."

Take two.

Bottle caps!

We livened up the party with a round of red hands.

Hahaha. Ayo kicking Pooja's ass.

Then we migrated to thumb war! Ayo vs. Sam in an epic match! Ayo was ultimately victorious.

Ayo taking on a random girl at the party who was hovering around us wanting to get in on thumb war.

Ian the birthday boy and Ayo go head to head in Wii Tennis. It was intense!

Party people in the elevator on our way to a diner for some late night grubbing. I still stand by my hungry man choice there!

The End.

Last Night's Party

Couple weekends ago I went to a rooftop party on the Upper East Side. The invitation had BBQ in it and the accompanying image was a grill. There was no BBQ at the party. BBQ FAIL.

Namik putting the elbow grease to WORK at the DIY mojito stand (a great party idea by the way).

Ayo and Stan in matching white v neck. Shockingly, I was not wearing a white v neck. Mine was purple. Big diff.

At some point, Ayo excitedly came over and pointed these two out to us. "Guys, there's a couple in matching shirts." I had to get a closer look.

Trying to take a more subtle picture of them by pretending to take a photo of Ayo.

Time to try on other people's sunglasses aka my favorite game.

Hark! Land HOOOOO!

I don't think we needed to buy more beer.

This guy was wearing shoes that baffled us all night. "I get good grip" he said.

Drunken group photo.

Kentay, Cristina, and Ayo!

Me being "THAT GUY" who ruins other people's nice photos. Yup. It had to be done.

A silver bullet in one hand and a bird in the other. I am SO RUDE. I blame it on the ah-ah ah-ah ah-al-co-hol.

Party people.

Stan and Cristina giving the camera the EYES AND THE LOOK.

The End!

Last Night's Party

Last night, I celebrated Cinco de Mayo with Jesus and the disciples. I don't know if something was on his mind, but Judas was strangely quiet.

Free Hug Versus $2 Deluxe Hug

If you don't live in New York City, let me tell you: Every weekend in a popular public space called Union Square, people loiter around with signs offering free hugs. Well, this prankster joins them, but to the annoyance of one free-hug offerer, ups the ante by offering passerbys deluxe hugs that cost just 2 dollars, although he is flexible on the pricing. Funny stuff occurs, especially with the one lady who comes back for seconds. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJfYAJJYMqg&fmt=18]

Weekend Update

Last Saturday afternoon I met up with friends, old and new, on the piers to enjoy the first truly warm weekend of the year. "Hey Pooja, run as fast as you can towards my camera." "OKAY."

This old dude was OUT. I'm glad he moved a few minutes after we took this photo because I was about to call 911 on his geriatric self. Okay, I wasn't. Wait, maybe I should have called 911... WHY DIDN'T I?? AM I A HORRIBLE PERSON???

Sunglass people.

While I was at the snack stand, someone took a photo of these mermaid chicas with my camera.

I don't remember Ariel having a tattoo...

Back of KG's head! Namik! Ayo!

A little ticket for public consumption.

Uno! People were busting out some mad rules I'd never heard of. I prefer the west coast style of play.

Ayo's STACK!

And an awesome jump to finish a great afternoon.

One more jump.

The End.

Weekend Update

Last Saturday I went to a few art galleries in Chelsea. Richard Woods' The Nature Show at Perry Rubenstein Gallery.

Duane Hason's hyperrealist sculptures on display at Van De Weghe. I pointed out this old man forlornly sitting inside the door to Pooja as we walked by and she freaked out. I don't know why she hates old people so much.

This deconstructed violin caught my eye at DJT.

Mini koons.

Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity by Yayoi Kusama currently exhibiting at the Gogosian Gallery is a must-see.

...a mesmerizing "infinity room" that operates on a system of simple yet ingenious optical devices. In a dark void, a delicate, shimmering mirage unfolds around the viewer, a myriad of gleaming lights that reproduce and reflect endlessly upon each other in golden silence.

Pooja "slipping" on one of the pieces at the John Waters exhibit at Marianne Boesky Gallery.

More photos later, but here's a quick peek into how some of my friends and I rang in the first seriously warm weekend of the year. This is the official "jump off" photo for the summer of 2009.

Last Night's Party

Last Saturday I attended a surprise belated birthday party for Pooja at a karaoke joint. While waiting for Pooja's arrival, her brother Chirag got the singing off on the right note. Mariya, with the SLR camera, looks very excited. Too excited.

Pooja and Chirag! It was also Chirag's birthday that week: Happy birthday guys!

Okay, back to singing!

Duet!

Ayo is all up in the food.

Ayo on the mike for a solo.

Pooja singing along with Namik. The lack of a microphone isn't stopping Pooja so long as no one takes that wine bottle away from her. Classy, Pooja!

Thumbs up for the food!

As we neared the end of our reservation at the karaoke bar, we all become more frenzied in trying to finish the alcohol. Here's Ayo doing his part as I enable the pitcher.

Singing loudly!

The wine bottle that never left Pooja's hand.

Haha.

Melissa takes a turn on the pole.

Ayo protecting the birthday girl...from herself.

Pooja dodging a flip.

Tri-party hat.

The End.

Weekend Update

I had a low key weekend. I dropped into a few art galleries and viewed Sophie Calle's "Take Care of Yourself" exhibition at Paul Cooper Gallery and Adel Abdessemed's "Rio" at David Zwirner. I survived the rain and met Pooja at her apartment where I found her drinking an enormous glass of milk. I thought people stopped doing this after elementary school.

Namik and I in front of Abdessemed's remarkable sculpture "Telle mere tel fils." This entwined and braided piece constructed from three planes extends over 65 feet long.

Namik and Pooja caught in the knot.

How do we lighten the mood? Jump of course.

Take two. Haha.

Then we explored the rest of the artist's works, like this regulation sized soccer ball made from razor wire.

Ouch.

I was struck by this photograph, "Saturday" of the artist's wife and children walking down a street near their home in New York. Look closely and the urban idyllic setting breaks down.

Stunningly sculpture of a blackened car body evoking violent imagery of riots, bombings, and war. "Practice zero tolerance" is a clay replica formed from the remains of a vandalized car during the 2005 riots in Perpignan, France.

Then we hopped into another gallery nearby.

Cardboard furniture.

Quite comfy!

Wall E as an old man.

Violent!

What mystery does this suitcase hold?

The banal wood suitcase is actually a portable party to go!

Dangerous!

Lastly, we went to Sophie Calle's exhibition. Previously where she asked various women to analyze a break-up email she received from her boyfriend. This was a wild exhibit that I highly recommend. And we were privileged to see the artist in person that day, although we were all too chicken to talk to her.

The email shot by a female sharpshooter at a shooting range.

Scene in New York

On my way to the gym yesterday after work I spotted this man in all yellow swaggering through 8th Street. Relatedly, Scouting NY observed a man in all orange this week.

The Murray Hill Song

Update: And finally the official (amusing) music video with the accompanying visual references for "Ode to Murray Hill!" [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eylKBJiDNeM&fmt=18]

Manhattan neighborhood Murray Hill, or as the New York Observer called it "Murray Hell," conveniently located generally between East 29th and 38th streets, has a particular reputation among locals for its homogeneous uniformity.

The stereotype runs something like this: Arriving in the City for jobs in the predictable areas of finance and PR, recently graduated affluent coeds--hair blown brunettes in skinny jeans and frat boys in seersucker shorts--from Syracuse and Penn swarm into dorm like luxe apartments (Windsor Court, Apt. 11F) and spend their nights at local bars such as Joshua Tree.

I'm surprised it took this long, but there's finally a song that pays homage to this neighborhood and its denizens, titled "Ode to Murray Hill" by DJ Lubel.

My world is wide open and I'm free as a bird But I've got to live on 34th from Park to Third. U Mich, Emory, Cornell--If you didn't go to one of these, Go away because you're poor!

Listen to the song here.

Confession: Although my residency there was a short New York minute, my first apartment in this city out of college was in Murray Hill, the Habitat to be exact. My roommate was a Bear Stearns banker from Penn.

[Thanks Sarah!]
