Eccentricity of Ricky Henderson

Before there was Manny being Manny and Chuck Norris facts, there was Ricky Henderson who was recently inducted into the baseball hall of fame. Here are some of his more memorable quotes and anecdotes.

When he was with the Yankees, Rickey supposedly described the view from his condo as so good that he could see "The Entire State Building."

In the early 1980s, the Oakland A’s accounting department was freaking out. The books were off $1 million. After an investigation, it was determined Rickey was the reason why. The GM asked him about a $1 million bonus he had received and Rickey said instead of cashing it, he framed it and hung it on a wall at his house.

After getting on the team bus one day, a Padres teammate told Rickey he should sit anywhere he wanted because he had “tenure.” Rickey responded, "Ten years? What are you saying? Rickey got 16, 17 years."

The Alternative Guinness World Records

A competitor to the established Guinness World Records has popped up with the Universal Record Database, "an open, participatory database for world records" where creativity is encouraged. Examples of submitted standing records so far (unless YOU break it) include "Longest Two-Person Comment Thread On A Facebook Status Update" (150 comments), "Most Whoopee Cushions Sat On In 30 Seconds Without Smiling Or Laughing" (18 cushions), "Fastest Consumption Of Six Cupcakes" (11 min 20 secs), "Most Images Of 'Uncle Jesse' Viewed On A Web Browser At Once" (63), and lastly "Most Binder Clips Attached To Face" (34).

I was at a party on Saturday night where Mary mentioned this feat after which she just happened to coincidentally "discover" a binder clip nearby. It got passed around for the contest: How long can you keep a binder clip attached to your cheek and eyebrow? I think the record at the party was around 25 seconds. I really wish I had my camera then.

Motorcycle Save

Awesome save with his knee by Raffaele De Rosa. I don't remember this move being available in Road Rash. Man, that was such a good game.

The Intern's First Entry

With an increasingly busy life I've had to hire an intern to help me maintain this blog by periodically posting some entries. I'm not a micro-manager, so I've given the intern wide latitude in terms of the content, so I can make no guarantees about the quality or appropriateness of what the intern decides to publish. Without further adieu, the intern's first entry is tennis related:

The Economics of the New Yankee Stadium

Check out this disparity in terms of bang for your buck between seeing a baseball game at Yankee Stadium or at the Mariner's Safeco Field.

Option 1: Two tickets to Tuesday night, June 30, Mariners at Yanks, cost for just the tickets, $5,000.

Option 2: Two round-trip airline tickets to Seattle, Friday, Aug. 14, return Sunday the 16th, rental car for three days, two-night double occupancy stay in four-star hotel, two top tickets to both the Saturday and Sunday Yanks-Mariners games, two best-restaurant-in-town dinners for two. Total cost, $2,800. Plus-frequent flyer miles.
