It Has No National Character

Stefany Anne Golberg wrote a great essay to mark the 30th anniversary of the Rubik's cube earlier this year.

Ernő Rubik has often been painted as a taciturn loner, a grudging genius who built a beautiful object he hoped would create an introspective space where individuals could consider the elegance of geometry, and who instead became an icon for one of the great marketing crazes of all time. Rubik developed the Cube inside 1970s Communist Hungary, in a milieu where individual pursuits were not just fun but often necessary for psychic survival. He didn’t entirely believe he could solve the Cube when he built it, and it took him a solitary month while living in his mother’s apartment to do so. In an interview in the mid-1980s, Rubik described the Golden Age of the Cube as the time before it went global, when ''it brought only delights to me." "One of the main characteristics of the Cube is that it has no national character,” he has said. “It’s about a human being trying to solve his or her problem.”

It has no national character. True. It's pain in the buttness transcends state borders

Muffin War

See how the English muffin on the right looks fluffier and has more nooks and crannies than the one on the left? The right one is made by Thomas and the company claims that this is a proprietary secret which is known only to  seven people. One of those seven, Chris Botticella is now being sued by Thomas after he accepted a job offer with a rival bakery, Hostess.

Oh snap.

Botticella scoffed and said there's muffin to their charge and that Thomas was just nutty and full of hot air, but a federal judge granted an injunction barring his hiring after concluding that Botticella's behavior demonstrated an intention to use Thomas' "trade secrets during his intended employment with Hostess."

Corporate muffin espionage! I love it!

Last Night's Party

Its been awhile since I've done one of these party recaps. I belong to a little karaoke crew and we go about once a month to Duets. We're each allowed to bring one or two plus ones. After cursing me for the past month for not yet inviting him, Ayo (along with repeat guest Mariya) came along for the raucous thing that is karaoke. This is our story. Before karaoke, we usually eat and drink somewhere beforehand around KTown. Bon Chon and their magical fried chicken is often the default location. While eating, we noticed that Ayo has an OCD way of eating his chicken. While the rest of us tossed the bones into the communal trash, Ayo neatly and obsessively lined his up like some twisted fried chicken graveyard on his plate.

During dinner Mariya regaled with tales from the most dramatic wedding ever, a wedding where she was deeply bit by a dog. Here, she showed off the bite and by show I mean, we held her arm down so we could look and go "ewwwww."

Once at Duets, it didn't take long for us to shift into karaoke fifth gear. This picture was taken around the third song I believe and people are already standing on the seat.

I won't say who but Rolando accidentally knocked off Andy's glasses which meant for Lynda: PHOTO OP!

Ayo too concurred: PHOTO OP!...as Andy points at his blind eyes, "Ummm guys..." Andy had been talking about getting new glasses anyways so I think we actually all did him a big favor.

I don't remember what we were singing, but apparently Ayo and I are the only ones that think this song was worth raising our arms for.

Rolando FINALLY recognized the song. And he was happy.

RAWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I was saying to Andy, "I'M SORRY I SPILLED YOUR DRINK ON YOUR SHIRT. I WILL BE WILLING TO PAY FOR ITS DRY CLEANING." Andy replied, "IT'S OKAY BRO."

Whatever Mike was singing in the background this whole time was making us dance!

Lynda singing earnestly. Andy thinking "What am I singing??" Jay photo bombing.

Andy hitting them high notes. His fallen testicles are somewhere on the ground.

I'm speechless. Just when we think Andy's run out of expressions he pulls this.

Lynda wants more Bon Chon fried chicken.

We all had been waiting for over an hour for Jodeci's "Lately" aka one of the greatest songs of love, heartbreak and harmony. When it finally started playing we. went. crazy.

We went crazy for Jodeci except for Lynda who had never heard it before. I can sense your outrage. Lower your pitchforks people.

And on that note, the end.

Scene in Alaska

4876070804_91e060f386_b I borrowed this photo from my high school friend Clay's Flickr after his recent trip back to our Motherland of Alaska for a wedding. I haven't been back to Alaska for quite awhile but this reindeer hot dog cart is quite an incentive to return home for a visit.

If you haven't yet tasted reindeer meat, know that you haven't lived at all.

Jon Sherman's Perfect Apartment

Jon Sherman's bachelor pad is the penthouse of a 4-story building in Brooklyn that also houses his company Flavor Paper which "designs, fabricates, and markets hand-screened wall coverings for projects ranging from Lenny Kravitz’s house in New Orleans to Frank Gehry’s IAC Building. ("We did holographic wallpaper for their executive garage," Sherman says. "Clearly prerecession.")"

He designed that stunning brass instrument sculpture hanging in his living room: "I bought all these off eBay, went down to a welder in Park Slope, and stood there and had him weld it,” he says.

Hey who told him he could move into my dream apartment without my permission?

Pause

No self awareness at all, but like DJ Pauly D said, "I love single Ronnie." I'm looking forward to watching their creepin' adventures on Jersey Shore tonight.
