50 Reasons to Be Pretty Damn Euphoric You Live in New York City

Village Voice chronicles a list of 50 reasons why it's good to live in New Yohk City! Some of my favorites:

44. The epic feeling you get running to catch a train and succeeding...just before the doors close.

43. Bored to Death. 30 Rock. SNL. And a million other things that film here and we love. RIP Law and Order.

34. There are almost 200 bars in the East Village alone.

26. Smart people are the norm, not the exception. (Which doesn't mean they're sane, but at least no one's boring.)

22. How easy it is to find doughnuts, pizza, Chinese food, or any other snack your drunken self desires at 4 a.m. Or to continue to drink. Responsibly!

5. We are, as a group, anti-fanny-pack as much as we are pro-gay-marriage. Hetero marriage, on the other hand, we can pretty much take or leave.

2. There is absolutely no reason to ever drink and drive.

Not on the list, but should be:

We have a solid K-Town and three Chinatowns. Our art museums and galleries. Botanica. Central Park and Union Square on the first hot day of the year.  Three major airport hubs. I get older, the girls stay the same age.

[Thanks Ayo!]

Readers Regrets

The New York Times asked their readers "to describe some financial decisions, or purchases, that they wish they could reverse."

I’d not have bought so many young women drinks. — Spofford Torrington

I regret not finishing the six months of college I had left to get my bachelor of science degree to marry a man who turned out to be gay, leaving me childless forever. — South Park Snooki

I regret the very expensive and fashionable eyeglasses. They looked great on me for about five minutes. Something about the shape of the lenses, however, made the progressive quality of the lens hard to adjust to. Even worse, the temple pieces were straight with no curve for the ear, so they would not stay on my head. The thick frames made them impossible to adjust for my slightly misaligned ears. After two months of compliments and constant adjusting, they slid off of my face and under the wheels of a car. — LBC

Naïve in my 20s, I cashed out $12,000 in retirement savings to pay deposits and move-in fees for a new apartment. Had I left it there, it would have been worth about $200,000 at retirement. Oops! — Aaron

Hm, memo to self: Increase my 401K contributions stat.

SCOTUS Debate Violent Video Game Ban

The Supreme Court justices heard arguments on both side of the debate over a law that bans the sale of violent video games. I love that Justice Kagan name dropped Mortal Kombat.

Justice Elena Kagan, the court’s newest and youngest member, seemed to be the only justice with even a passing familiarity with the genre under review, even if it was secondhand.

“You think Mortal Kombat is prohibited by this statute?” she asked Mr. Morazzini. It is, she added, “an iconic game which I am sure half the clerks who work for us spent considerable time in their adolescence playing.”

Can someone please photoshop the justices as Mortal Kombat characters? Thanks.

When People Break Up

David McCandless analyzed 10,000 relationship status updates on Facebook and charted out the peaks and valleys of break ups over a year. As John Mayer said (yes, I'm quoting him; shut up, I like his music):

No way November will see our goodbye. When it comes to December it's obvious why, No one wants to be alone at Christmas time. And come January we're frozen inside, Making new resolutions a hundred times. February, won't you be my valentine?

And we'll both be safe 'til St. Patrick's Day.

Scene in New York

While taking the subway back up to my apartment on Saturday night this past Halloween weekend (it was impossible to snag a cab), I spotted Wonder Woman nodding off on the R train. Her head was leaning closer and closer to the shoulder of the sleeping stranger next to her. After a few minutes, voila! After I snapped this photo, Wonder Woman's friend said, "You can't do that!"

My friend Cyrus and I asked "Why not?"

She replied, "You can't! Delete it."

"Why?"

"Because she's famous!"

Bicycle Girl

The Sartorialist (obviously), Olivia, London.

A few weeks ago I was at dinner with a friend and couple of his girl friends. Three bottles of sake later we tried to guess the top three qualities in order that each of us look for in a potential mate. We had one guess each per person. Some guesses were vague: "She likes guys with a...nice personality?"

When it came around to me, without hesitation my friend immediately said, "Matt likes girls with nice legs."

True.
