Growing up in the Nineties, the theft of car audio systems seemed ubiquitous to me. However, over the past 15 years car stereo thefts have drastically declined. Here are some of the factors that contributed to this drop.

  • Auto manufacturers realized they could charge more by factory installing better audio stereo systems, which made them more difficult to steal.
  • Stereos are cheaper, thus lower profit margins for theives.
  • Computerization of cars make stereo systems both more complicated to remove and install.
