Sophia Loren sandwiched between a fork and spoon for her 1971 cookbook titled "Cucina con Amore."
It appears to be a painting at first glance, but Sharon Core's "Still Life with Steak" is a meticulously composed photograph, which is inspired by 19th-century American artist Raphaelle Peale's painting of the same name.
"Everything is built on a pyramid,” Core said, "so it appears very solid and aesthetically whole, but the details of the objects belie a more grotesque reality”: the visual assault of a bloody piece of raw meat (and the contrastingly wan, fingerlike asparagus), the tension between painterliness and photographic precision. Heightening the impression of assault, a dry, purplish carrot emerges from the glistening flesh, leading the eye to an unwashed beet lurking behind the fat at right."
I want to grill and then eat that photograph.
A few friends and I have started a monthly supper club where one person selects a relatively new restaurant that we all dine at. The inaugural meal was held at 6th Street Kitchen in the East Village. The food was delicious and inventive in a non-intimidating atmosphere. My friend Annie (Thanks!) hooked us up with a few complimentary plates, which was fantastic as well. If you need a versatile restaurant with tasty food and wine for a casual dinner with a few friends, a romantical date, or an outing with a large group of friends, then this space is ideal. A few photos below of some of the plates that we ordered. Some dishes were not photographed (like the amazing chorizo sliders) because...well, they looked too good and we ate them before I thought to snap a photo.
Apparently Rikers Island's carrot cake, which is baked on holidays by its inmates, is famous within the prison walls for its deliciousness. The New York Times also published the recipe (warning: batch will make 25 loaves of carrot cake).
See how the English muffin on the right looks fluffier and has more nooks and crannies than the one on the left? The right one is made by Thomas and the company claims that this is a proprietary secret which is known only to seven people. One of those seven, Chris Botticella is now being sued by Thomas after he accepted a job offer with a rival bakery, Hostess.
Oh snap.
Botticella scoffed and said there's muffin to their charge and that Thomas was just nutty and full of hot air, but a federal judge granted an injunction barring his hiring after concluding that Botticella's behavior demonstrated an intention to use Thomas' "trade secrets during his intended employment with Hostess."
Corporate muffin espionage! I love it!
I borrowed this photo from my high school friend Clay's Flickr after his recent trip back to our Motherland of Alaska for a wedding. I haven't been back to Alaska for quite awhile but this reindeer hot dog cart is quite an incentive to return home for a visit.
If you haven't yet tasted reindeer meat, know that you haven't lived at all.
I love that in his funny interview with New York Magazine's Daily Intel, David Alan Grier plugs his personal food blog "Chocolate Glutton" that chronicles his "cooking adventures" (with photos!). When explaining what he disliked about Times Square he also mentioned one of my favorite activities: "I love walking through carefully posed group shots on the streets in Times Square and ruining them."
This is the sort of quality day time television that those of us working during the day miss.
Also, my advice to this girl who can't stop noshing on toilet paper: stop or just stop admitting you enjoy the finest fiber offered by Charmin, because who seriously is asking questions that would compel you to admit and disclose such a (Ed. disgusting) habit. Of all the subjects and issues there are to discuss in this world, how does one end up on this topic? Now that her secret has been revealed to the world, she's going to be the butt of a lot of jokes.
I know it's a fad popular only with tourists now, but I don't care! I love me some Pinkberry especially on such a hot day like today. Anyway, the above picture is the very first Pinkberry location. It's on Huntley Drive near Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California.
An amazing Cream of Wheat ad from 1965. I love the copy, "It takes ideas to keep kids interested in breakfast." I actually really want to try this. It looks good. Will report findings next week.
