Creepy Boards, a New York band is contesting that Coldplay's song Livin La Vida Loca "Viva la Vida" was stolen from them after Chris Martin, Coldplay's lead singer, saw them perform at the CMJ festival in New York. As WOW points out, Creepy Boards's song is ironically titled "The Songs I Didn't Write." And they have a video, which is naturally on YouTube where they be callin' Coldplay out! Giovanny Gutierrez, the director of interactive media at ad agency Tinsley, surreptitiously recorded his girlfriend, Lauren Bernat (who also happens to work in advertising) playing Wii Fit and then, as we all know--all 2 million plus of us--he posted it on YouTube. And despite their advertising connections, he swears up and down that this wasn't commissioned by his agency or Nintendo.
How'd she react after she found out? Guiterrez told the LA Times:
"She was FURIOUS," wrote Gutierrez, who said she "called me on the phone screaming her head off and then hung up on me."
"But now [she] finds herself actually laughing about it and enjoying her 15 minutes of fame."
It really brings to life the adage that it is better to do and ask for forgiveness later than to ask for permission first and be rejected. Wait, did I just make that up?? Either way, it's a pretty useful principle. I like the guy's quick-footed justification for all of this:

I can see him racking his brain for an excuse after his girlfriend found out about the video. His first thought was "Damn, how'd she find out? I thought I posted it as private and only sent the link to Jacko, Tommy, and Sandman."
"You fucker! How could you do this?! What were you thinking?!"
"Baby, baby. Calm down. What are you talking about?
"What am I talking about?! That fucking video of me on YouTube that you recorded. That's what I'm talking about!"
"Ohhh, that. Baby, calm down. I was just working on an, uhm, viral spec. Yea, a spec. For a potentially huge new client of ours. You know, Nintendo. You know how it is. You're in advertising. If we get this then I, I mean, we can finally start looking at those special rings that you like to talk about so much. Just doing it for us. The team. Fuck Mr. Tinsley. I'm doing this for the team of you and me. You can't be getting so upset like this all the time. Now I'll be home in 10 minutes. What's for dinner?"
The lesson here is that:

Moron uses an example of a banana-- "the atheists' nightmare" --to prove the existence of God, because a banana perfectly conforms to the human hand, indicators that signal that it's ready to eat, and a tab (I think it's called a stem) that permit easy peeling for consumption. The point about bananas also being shaped like a handy gun, for self protection against the heathens, is another compelling piece of evidence. He left out another feature of the banana that is so naturally useful: It can also work as a PHONE! The banana phone gets crystal clear reception and comes with unlimited minutes for the true believers.
Just watch this ridiculous commercial with sound on, especially for the satisfying pay off in the end which is how I wish all local car commercials would end. I'm pretty speechless after watching this video that Brian from Ikeepadiary.com (one of the early inspirations for my blog) posted. He went to a pet shop and witnessed a bigger lizard attacking a smaller one. And by attack, I mean eat. But the big lizard chomps off the smaller lizard's tail...and the tail proceeds to...flap and twitch all over the place. Truly the stuff of nightmares. The "alternative" commercials such as the these here--a perfect blend of a popular media distribution vehicle (YouTube), Internet memes ("wow" stunts), and celebrities (Jackass crew)--are a brilliant example of marketing and advertising appropriation of counter-culture activities and adopting it to astutely manage its brand, endorsers, and product. Pretty deft move for a goliath of a company like Nike.

Who needs MTV when I can watch brilliant music videos like this one for "Again & Again" by the Bird & the Bee on YouTube? Featuring two sexy fronts--a lip synching chick who I now have a major Indie hipster crush on and Apple's operating system with all the various peripheral software--this music video is another one of those creative endeavors that I really admire and simultaneously slap myself for not doing first already.
